Yeti also known as the abominable snowman, is a supposed large primate-like
creature reported to live in the Himalaya mountains. Although unlike Bigfoot
in physical appearance the Yeti is similarly described as a large hominoid living
out of sight in the high mountains of Tibet. These mountains include Mount
Everest and reach over 25,000 feet high. At this elevation there is permanent
ice, glaciers, and snow fields. Given the temperature and lighting conditions
it is hard to get good snow pictures showing enough detail to support reasonable
speculation about what kind of creature made them.
For hundreds of years, mountain natives in have been telling stories about a humanoid monster that wanders around the mountain range but mountain pictures showing this creature have been hard to come by. The frequency of reports increased in the early 20th century, when Westerners began making determined attempts to climb the many mountains in the area and sometimes reported seeing odd creatures or strange tracks. In 1951, respected mountaineer Eric Shipton, photographed the track thought to belong to this creature. The availability of a well exposed, sharp, clear picture from a respected source touched of a great deal of interest. In 1998, Craig Calonica reported seeing two apelike, bipedal creatures on Mount Everest. With the many Yeti reports the creature crossed over into popular culture where it became the stuff of books, movies and articles in the weekly scandal magazines. |
